Reversioning is a creative practice-based methodology for revisiting past colonial archives using tools of the present - such as language, art, and AI - to imagine alternative futures outside colonial timelines.
Reversioning asks: "What if there was a different version of history? What could it look like?"

Reversioning is not about rewriting history or finding truth. It’s about experimenting with the temporalities of time to create new possibilities. By engaging with colonial tools - the same systems that shaped dominant narratives - Reversioning turns instruments of control into tools for liberation. Think of it like a vaccine: the antidote to a poison often comes from the poison itself. In the same way, Reversioning reframes how these tools work, transforming the very tools of domination into instruments for imagining freedom.

Reversionist-in-Chief

Hi, I'm Esther Bello (but you can call me Tokyo). I’m an artist, and creator of the Reversioning methodology. My work lives at the intersection of art, technology, feminism, and decolonial theory. I'm developing Reversioning as part of my PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London.

My journey began in Lagos, Nigeria where I was born. Finding the Alté community, I was able to explore alternative identities and narratives within myself that challenged mainstream societal norms. That exploration birthed "Tokyo".

Later, during my PhD at Goldsmiths, I began questioning colonial timelines and their impact on identity and knowledge systems. This led to the creation of Reversioning. My mission is to make Reversioning a lifelong practice, evolving from a doctoral research into a creative movement.

Reversioning Rituals

& Projects

Reversioning Rituals are collaborative gatherings where we explore colonial archives and speculate on alternative futures through informal conversations with human and other-than-human participants

These rituals are spaces for collective imagination. We revisit historical materials - films, literature, music, etc. - and ask:

“What if this story was not mediated through colonial powers? What if there was a different version?”

Reversioning thrives on community and collaboration. Here’s how you can be a part of the movement:
